FEATURE ARTICLE
The feature in this newsletter is "Redefining
Christianity - Understanding the Purpose Driven Movement" by Bob
DeWaay as excerpted in the Discernment Newsletter, Volume 17 Number
3, May/June 2006 from DeWaay's book by the same name available here.
I continue to receive more and more complaints about the after effects
of "purpose driven" materials and Rick Warren's Dominionist agenda from
churches all over the world. Apparently if you don't sign on to his
programs (literally) you are seen as a traitor to the "cause" and are vilified.
We have shown repeatedly that Warren's ideas are, in many cases, not biblical
at all but rather clever schemes. The Lord warned us about schemers
(Eph. 4:14) who would try to gain followers from within the body of Christ.
Those who write books, intentionally stripped of the Gospel message, in
order to promote an egotistical and unbiblical Dominionist agenda of the
New Apostolic Reformation and Emerging Church, are exactly those we have
been warned to avoid.
1 Tim. 6:3-5 If anyone teaches false doctrines
and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ
and to godly teaching, he is conceited and understands nothing ... who
have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to
financial gain.
If you don't think that men like Warren are writing books for financial
gain you are giving him more credit than he is due. His book sales
are funding an entire unbiblical movement! Warren has intentionally
avoided the controversy of the Gospel in order to sell books, as well as
ingratiating himself with the media such as Ladies
Home Journal. I find this despicable. Christians are not
put here on earth to take over the systems of government of the world ("overthrow
the governments" according to C. Peter Wagner) and solve all worldly
problems while bragging about what we plan to do. We are here to
be light and salt and humbly preach the Gospel. I have seen Warren
balk at numerous golden opportunities in print and on TV to explain the
Gospel message AT ALL. This is why it is still a mystery to me why
so many churches have signed on to the programs of a man whose stated mentors
are heretic Robert Schuller and false apostle C. Peter Wagner. Time
to go back to the Bible and study to show yourself approved (2 Tim. 2:15)!
